Final

New London

In 1646 New London, CT was established. It was named after London, England. New London was originally a whaling town that is why there are whales throughout the whole town. It is located just under an hour away from the state capital. And less than 25 from Rode Island. Located on the corner of The Thames River and Long Island sound is one of the biggest cities in the state. Something that makes New London different from other cities is this town has been rebuilt, not always from the ground up, but still rebuilt a lot in the town’s history.
One of the first times New London was built was because it was burned down by a man named Benedict Arnold, who was British, and betrayed the Americans. New London holds one of the few famous forts in countries history, Fort Trumbull. He burned the fort down along with the city. He killed many people and destroyed the city. It took a few years but the rebuilt the town and the fort.
The next big disaster that had a huge impact on the town was the hurricane of 1938. This hurricane is considered the state’s worst natural disaster of the 20th century. It happened on September 21st.  Residents of the town didn’t know the hurricane was coming because of inaccurate weather forecasts. It ripped through the town and took out many homes, buildings, and caused a huge number of deaths. What is now known as Ocean Beach was once beach front property. Many homes were there and after the hurricane none remained. There are many pictures of the town before and after, and it is amazing to see what the town did to rebuild itself. Boats, big ferry sized and even bigger ones, crashed up through the docks and were land driven. It was a terrible disaster.
Since this hurricane, two more big ones have occurred; Hurricane Irene and the following year, Hurricane Sandy. Irene arrived in 2011, knocking out power in the town for almost a week. It destroyed houses and other buildings. Not as bad as the 1938 hurricane though. And in 2012 Hurricane Sandy came through. It tore up beaches and some buildings. One of the saddest parts of the town that was destroyed was row of beaches that were all one beach but separated into four. Now a year later, it is still not fixed yet and back to its original form.

The town has now taken a lot more cautions since these two hurricanes to be more prepared for future ones. The town is good when it comes to losing power. And houses near the beaches are boarded up more carefully. There is really nothing the town hasn’t gone through that it come back from. Years later this town will still be running and always rebuild itself after anything that happens to it.

Two Lyndon State College students are curious about what a public college president’s general schedule looks like so they interviewed Lyndon State College’s president, Joe Bertolino, last Tuesday.
Being a college president is not an easy job, which needs to put lots of effort and energy to manage the entire school and he even plays an important role to push the school into a brighter future. Dr. Joe Bertolino began his career as president of Lyndon State College in July 2012, and this year is his second year at Lyndon State.
“I often compare the second year as students’ sophomore year in college,” Bertolino said when he was sitting on a comfortable couch and being interviewed. “People are used to seeing me. ‘It’s Joe.’”
When the freshness wears off, everything is not as exciting as the first year; Bertolino’s schedule stays the same.
“I don’t control my schedule and I can’t make appointments. Darcie does not allow me to do that,” Bertolino said. Darcie Miles is the executive assistant to the president.
Generally, Bertolino’s daily schedule consists of lots of back-to-back meetings. He said that he is not a morning person, and most of his work starts at 9 a.m. When he got this interview on Tuesday afternoon, he has various meetings scheduled before and after it, and then he has personal training at 6 p.m.
“This is actually a light day because I don’t have anything after 7 o’clock,” Bertolino said cheerfully.
Although Bertolino has lots of meetings every day, if the time permits, Bertolino prefers walking around the campus, attending students’ events and saying hi to different folks, offices, and faculties. If he is off campus, he will attend plenty of events, meetings, and speaking to some groups.
Bertolino is usually invited to community events and fundraisers to talk about the college. Mostly, he would talk about the community, the programs the college offers, and why he thinks that Lyndon is a special place.
Once the job gets stressful, he will stop what he is doing and then take a walk around the campus.
“This is a good reminder to me why I am doing what I am doing,” Bertolino said. “Students sometimes don’t realize it, but they actually give me lots of encouragement.”
Bertolino mentioned that he held a hundred events at the President’s House, such as student dinners, dinners with athletes, student leaders and other events last year. For instance, every senior who is going to graduate this December and next year will be invited to the President’s House for dinner before the end of the academic year.

Bertolino said, “I would say being a president of a college is a life-style.”

Final Project Topic

For my final project I am going to work alone.
I am going to do a tour of my home town. It will be a mix of video and pictures. I think I will use the site Meograph, the website I was assigned to do a demonstration on earlier this semester, but if the project becomes to complicated I will just make it into a movie.
My sister helped me video tape it while I was driving, so I could take about what the video was showing and I could be safe too. All the other pictures were taken by me.

Video Project1

Two college students took a tour in the Fire Department with an assistant chief in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Saturday afternoon.
Mark LaRose, an assistant chief working in the Fire Department for over a third of his life, gave Julia and I a tour talking about the Fire Department’s history, facilities, and his personal experience.
The Fire department was established on October 31, 1843, with the first house company called “The Torrent.” The department has processed five separate volunteer companies through the town during several decades. Currently, there are 10 full-time employees and 20 paid on-call fire fighters.
The building has two floors, the top floor has both the working area and the bedrooms, and the bottom floor has three fire trucks. LaRose showed a place with some comfortable sofas and a television where they usually relax and hang out. Normally, they go to work, have lunch in the kitchen, then watching the news on the sofa, and do their daily work.
LaRose showed his room, which is shared with his co-workers. On the wall, several photos present the strong and close relationships between him and his colleagues of thirty years.
“Fire fighters are like brothers,” LaRose said.
When LaRose was pointing to the big and black alarm surrounded by the photos, he mentioned that the alarm brought a loud sound not only in the daytime, but during the night. He also said that he tried to sleep when the alarm rings during the early morning when it isn’t his responsibility. He would like it if the alarm didn’t ring during the entire day.
LaRose then leaded the tour walking down to the first floor and started introducing three different fire trucks, Engine one, Rescue two and the ladder fire truck, also called The Tower.
Engine One contains 12.5 gallons water and Rescue Two has more efficient fire equipment for rescue purposes like vehicle rescue.
I was curious about what fire fighters need to wear on the fire call, so I asked LaRose for the information. He turned to me and asked with a smile on his face, “Do you want to try the uniform on?”
The uniform was too large for me to wear and it was heavy as well. I also put the helmet on and the oxygen bottle on my back. It took a long time for me to put all the equipment on, and finally, I seemed like a real fire fighter with a poorly-fitting uniform.
In addition, before I tried it on, I thought it was easy and convenient for fire fighters to rescue. However, it was beyond my imagination. It was difficult for me to walk and to run. What’s more, it is also hot with it on.
According to this experience, I thought that under a high-stressful, serious and hot situation, fire fighters need to not only wear heavy and uncomfortable uniforms but to protect themselves as well. Also, they try their best to solve the problem and save lives.

“It is our responsibility, and it is our job,” LaRose said.

Video Project 1

In this video project we are going to focus on the Fire Department in St. J. We are going to start off with what the inside of the department looks like, then talk to the fire fighters about is this what they wanted to be when they grew up (when they were kids). We are going to ask them for some fire safety tips for college students. And we will end with them giving us some stories of their times in the fire department. We will say now, that things may change. Because we haven't gone yet to see them, we may find a better way to end the video project or start it off. We will be doing the recording with Yolanda's camera/phone. The paper will probably be done by me. The video will have its own sound from the recording because their will probably be talking in the background, and maybe we will get lucky (although it will be a bad thing if it happens for someone else) the alarm will go off and the trucks will be called out.

Exercise 14

Online Newspaper:
The Day

The Day, is my town paper. It is what I read when I am home. When you look it up online, it doesn't have the full show or news cast. But it does have clips of what the local news cast has.

If you go to the Multimedia tab on the website, you can see a list of either videos or photos. It shows you the latest video that has been posted.

There is also one more thing that they have online that is not on the actual newscast. If you run the mouse of the multimedia tab, then over the video tab you will see another option that says Live Lunch Brunch. This is a concert and interview series that is only recorded and done on Thursdays at 12. It is a live recording of bands who come into the studio and play. And any band can play, they can sign up online.

Everything looks good. I think the online newspaper is kept up nicely and it is very professional looking. I really like the Live Lunch Brunch. I think it is unique and separates this paper from any other online paper. The packages are the same length of time as all the other packages online. The videos are the same length as average news reports, maybe a little longer. And the topics of the packages are interesting because they are what people who get the paper want to see. The latest video is titled Two Schools One Campus. The two schools they are talking about are in my town, I didn't go to either one of them but I had friends go to them. And I found it interesting. One school is the New London High School and the other is The Magnet School. They are connected by a hallway. It is the same same but different. It is pretty cool and I actually like to watch that package. Videos on here include sports, political, and other topics that deal with the town of New London and The New London County.

I really liked the online newspaper of The Day.

Tom Clancy:

The Hunt for Red October Live On
            # 1 New York Times bestselling novelist, Tom Clancy, died at the age of 66. He will never know how his fans liked his latest book which has yet to come out.
Tom Clancy has written a total of 17 books, one of his most famous and first book being The Hunt for Red October. Clancy is known for his books that deal with the military.
Although his books are on bestselling lists, there was much criticism about his topics. His books could seem almost too real.
In 1994 he wrote a book about a plane that crashed into the U.S. Capitol. In 2002 in an interview he fought back against the idea that he was inspiring terrorist in his books, this interview coming just after 9/11.
“I really don’t think Osamba Bin Laden woke up on morning and said ‘I’m going to attack the West let me read a Clancy book and find out how to do it best’ I don’t think so.” This was what Clancy said during an interview.
In the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan was president, Clancy’s career took off. This was the time in history after the Vietnam War and his books celebrated the military.
His books also became films as well, which was a major change from what was being shown at the time. His movies were showing the military and CIA as heroes, because of this it made him some sort of a hero in the political area.
Even though some readers didn’t like his works, many other people did. The New York Times Book Review said, “He constantly taps the current worlds situation for its imminent dangers and spins them into an engrossing tale.”
The Washington Post said, “heart-stopping action…entertaining and eminently topical.” The Wall Street Journal said, “Highly entertaining.”

Exercise 12

Critic on CNN iReport

This website looks and feels a little like Tumblr in the sense of finding a post, liking it, and looking for more like it. It is easy to use. I am not sure if I like it though. When I look up news this just seems too complicated. I prefer watching the news on TV or reading it in the paper/web ( if it is for world or country news) the news I look up usually is celebrity news. I go to eonline.com and check out the news everyday. That is where I get my news on what they are doing, plus it is not just news on celebrities in the U.S. but also the royal family and what celebrities are doing outside of the country. When I wake up in the morning one of the first things I do is check my Twitter and Facebook because those always have the latest news on it.
I see where this website could be useful for people who don't use Twitter or Facebook, but it is kind of slow for me whereas I can get news fast by looking at my other social media sites.

Exercise Eleven

Lyndon State College campus tour from soundslide
Most people, but not everyone, usually first comes to LyndonState College on a tour group.
The tour consists of meeting with a tour leader, whose title is a Student Ambassador. The group, or select individuals, who are on the tour get a detailed explanation of the school.
They are shown everything from the admissions office to the library to the pool to maybe one or two dorms. Each student’s tour is unique because of when they take their tour and who their leader is.
We asked a couple of students what their favorite spots and parts of the tour were we got different results. Stephanie Burke, sophomore and Animation Major changing to Music Business, said her favorite part of the tour was the view, “…the view of campus, because it’s very nice here.”
When asked what else about the campus she liked she gave this quote, “the HAC building and seeing all of the artwork there.” Burke had toured the campus in the Fall, she was also asked if the time of year had an input on her decision to come here and she said it did not.
Another student who was asked the same questions was Jenna Twarog, a sophomore and Music Business Major who is changing to Social Work, said what stood out at her LSC tour was the studio [the music studio]. Twarog visited also in the Fall and said she that the colors and feeling about Fall up here in Vermont made a difference for some students and some parents, but did not say if it did for her.
Some people come to LSC who have not taken a college campus tour. Melissa Segall, Atmospheric Science Major and a member of the SGA Board, did not come to the college after having taken a tour here, she said she just had faith it would be what she needed.
“And I didn’t mind not seeing it, but if I had it probably just would’ve made me want to come even more. I based my choice on the reputation of the program alone but LSC has a lot more than that. Either way it’s good to have ended up here.”
In many cases taking a tour of Lyndon State College, or any college is a good thing. That way the prospecting students and parents can get a feel for the college.

Even though some people choose not to take the tour offered by the college, many others do. Either way, the students and families are happy with the choice and are still here. And on any given day you can see the many reasons why students love this place for everything it offers and much more.

Exercise Ten

Audio Slideshow Project Synopsis:

For this project we decided to focus on Lyndon State College. Yolanda came up with the idea, and took charge. She thought  of doing a slide show on this school and recording a tour guide. She then followed an student ambassador around the school as she gave a tour. She recorded her talking and will be using the recording as part or fully as our sound bed. Along with the recording of the tour, we have pictures to use to show what she is mentioning whilst she is talking. The idea is to show Lyndon as it really is. What you will see is it as if you went to school here everyday, not just on special days. Yolanda and I will both be taking pictures. The recording itself goes in between three to four minutes. That means there will be a lot of pictures to go through for our audience to see, roughly about 40 to 50 minutes. By the end of out slideshow we hope people will actually want to go here, or for those who still go here will be reminded why they go to a school as great as this. We will be both working on the editing and display a well done slideshow that will follow the rules and allow people who may be surfing blogs to get a glimpse of LSC.

Exercise Nine

Photo Gallery :
------For the photo gallery part of this assignment, I choose to do the piece on a Tumblr blog that I follow. Like Lore Love is the name of the website and it shows pictures of places, buildings, rooms, just architecture. I love looking at pictures like these because it makes me curious as to what my life will be like in the future and where I will live and what my home will look like. I think it is cool to look at these pictures and to see how other people live. What they have done to create their dream homes. It loos unrealistic and perfect. It makes me want to go to these places of the photos and just stand where the picture was taken and marvel at the perfection and beauty of it. I really do not think the creator(s) of this site should change anything.

Slideshow 1:
------For the first slideshow I looked on the website Vimeo, and looked up wedding slideshows, because those are always the best slideshows, in my opinion, to watch. They should portrait the relationship of the couple getting married and at the same time want people to look at the pictures of their wonderful, magical day. This one is Tess and Ed
slideshow. I really have nothing bad to say about it. It was a mixture between black and white pictures and colored pictures. The music worked well. I actually wish I had been at this wedding because of what I had seen. I think that maybe they could have taken some video clips and added them to the slideshow but otherwise it was wonderful the way it is.

Slideshow 2:

------For the second slideshow I chose to do it on prom hairstyle pictures. It had no audio but next to the pictures are captions tell what kind of hairstyle it is. Love to Know Makeup is a site that has different things in it. I think there could have been a lot more options and pictures in this slideshow, and a better background as well as better dresses on the models.

Exercise seven

I think NewsLINC is very useful. I don't use it much right now, but after looking at it more I have seen it can be helpful in all of my classes. I think it should get a better look, bolder colors. It just seems a little dull right now.

Exercise Six (Recording)

Recording

Julia Rose
For our podcast, Yolanda and I decided to choose a topic that would give a lot of people time to think and give good answers. Plus we wanted a topic that people would actually want to listen to. We chose the topic what is people’s favorite things to do in the fall and if they could give us a story about a past event they have done in the fall. We both interviewed separate people we knew and asked them what they like to do in the fall and recorded them. I asked two people, my sister Laura and my brother Robert. I thought it would be a good idea to use those two people because they are not from this state so it would give more of diversity in answers. I also asked interviewed them because my sister is 16, and my brother is 13. Those are two different ages that you will not find on campus. They are younger too so my thought was it may give us different answers than what we would get from college students. When I interviewed them I did get different answers, answers that I wanted and were distinct to their age group. My brother gave me a typical 13 year old answer which was getting candy at Halloween.

Fall is a step between summer and winter. Fall lasts for almost three month, which is from September to November. It can be a mixed season with very warm days along with cooler days. Especially for some areas, it is an amazing season when the leaves turn magnificent colors. During these months, most people have lots of things to do, such as climbing, boating, travelling, and carving pumpkins. Also, there are several breaks and festivals during the fall, like fall break, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.
Julia and I created this Podcast, which was for the students who wanted to share their stories. We interviewed some students from Lyndon State College, some of them are Vermonters, and some of them are international students. From their descriptions, fall is not only for people to enjoy the beautiful scenery, but also for them to experience various interesting and energetic activities.
I love travelling in fall because of the mild-mannered weather. I went to Boston, New York City and Burlington, VT during fall break. During the Thanksgiving break, I went south to Montgomery, AL, and Atlanta. Experiencing the world and culture is my favorite thing to do in fall foliage season.
Na Zhan, a senior major in Education, said that she had the craziest experience during fall break. Sarah Chen, a sophomore major in Business, talked about her experience in both America and China. She wanted to go boating with her American friends in Vermont. She also has a good memory of climbing mountains with her family back in China.

What’s more, an American twin sister, named Tabi and Tela, also have their favorite things to do during the fall foliage season. Both of them are from Vermont so they know that Vermont is positioned as the gold standard when it comes to fall leaves. Tabi talks about her favorite thing to do, which is pumpkin festival in King New Hampshire. Tela talks about pumpkin carving as well. She also shared a story with us about the leaves fights with her siblings.

Exercise Five

For our podcast, Yolanda and I are talking about what people like to do in the fall. We are interviewing two people each. We may not use all of the four extra people but we are having extra people just in case we need them. We will also talk about what we ourselves like to do in the fall.

Exercise Four

Podcast Critique Assignment

1. ICTV: Cheerleading. For my first podcast I watched one about cheerleading, sticking with my blog name. It was a really good podcast to start with. It shows some tumbling skills and some stunting skills which were pretty cool to witness. I liked how it was not just something to listen to but something to watch, something that gave inspiration and makes me want to try each knew technique even though I haven't cheered in over a year. What  I didn't like was that there was only one of it. There was no follow up podcast. Which makes me think if it was popular with other people. It did have a full bar of likes but it makes me confused as to why there are not more like it. If there were more of it  I would definitely watch more. And it is one that I would put on my IPhone to watch and to try and do myself, but as I said I haven't cheered in over a year so they would be hard to do.

2. Our Voice Now-Humanity's Team-Co-Creator Network: Is Cheerleading A Competitive Sport: Listening to this podcast it sounds more like a radio station. It was pretty interesting to listen to. This one girl, Sarah, is the host of the show. She interviewed a girl names Emily about cheerleading. I loved listen to Emily talk about cheerleading, because she talks the way I talked when I was cheerleading. I wish it was more exciting, or even a video too! Like show both girls show Emily's team, just something. Our Voice Now is a podcast is a group that talks about different things and I think that I would listen to it again. But I wouldn't put it on my IPhone. It just isn't that important to me.

A Year Later the Bridge Over Roaring Creek is Open Again

After 75 years of standing over Roaring Creek the bridge was washed away from a flood last year, leaving about $700,000 in costs to fix the well known landmark in the area. Another Bridge Opening Ceremony

Last year a flood washed away the 75 year old bridge over Roaring Creek. Since then the County has been working on getting it fixed quickly for those who used it everyday.

They cost of the bridge to fix it was $700,000. The county paid $100,000; the state paid $200,000; and the U.S. Department of Transportation funds were $400,000.

The wash away of the bridge became an inconvenience to many of the people who used to travel it everyday. One Oak Grove resident, Josh Spiva, found it very inconvenient:"Traveling all that way way has made it very inconvenient for a lot of people. We've had to use a lot of time and gasoline just to make what otherwise would be very short trips. Having this bridge erected so quickly is a blessing."

After a year of no bridge over Roaring Creek, the bridge was officially opened this morning, at 11 a.m., during a ceremony. Some who attended the ceremony were, Midville Major Seth Montana, U.S. Congressman Nancy Draughorn, and United States Senator Warren Johns.

Man Dies of Heart Attack After Vehicle Goes Through A Window Next to Him

John Barker was trying to help Annie Coulter out of her vehicle after her brakes gave way and she went through the Central Restaurant, where he was eating a meal. He was trying to help her out when he collapsed and died of a heart attack. Another Chevrolet car crash through restaurant window

At 12:31 pm today, Annie Coulter, of Barton Vt., was operating a vehicle when she tried to move out of the way of a pedestrian. As she swerved to miss the pedestrian her brakes failed and she went crashing through the window of the Central Restaurant on Depot Street in Lyndonville, Vt.

A man by the name of John Barker, of Concord Vt., was sitting in the restaurant at the time of the accident. He was not hit by the vehicle, but did receive a few cuts from the glass that had shattered at the time of the accident.

Barker then tried to go help Coulter. While trying to get her out of the vehicle he started to complain about pains coming from his chest, he then collapsed and died because of a heart attack.

Coulter received a few minor injuries from the accident.

Man & Tree Shot, But Where's The Bear

Conrad Masse and Wayne Goff were out bear hunting together on October 20, 2013 when Goff spotted the bear and proceeded to shot three times; one hitting the bear, one hitting a nearby tree, and one hitting Goff.

While Masse and Goff were trying to hunt a bear together they split up on different sides of the road, waiting for the bear to come out of the woods. When the bear come out Masse opened fire three times one hitting Goff.

Goff was taken to the hospital after being shot through the middle, into the pelvic, and has been released on stable conditions. No news on the outcome of the bear.

Masse was served a citation to appear in the Orleans Superior Court on February 28, 2014, being charged on the count of Aggravated Assault. He was also issued a ticket, from Fish and Game, for shooting on the road, having a loaded rifle in his vehicle, and not having proper display of permits for bear hunting.

A Look at Another Cheerleading Blog

http://collegecheerheaven.blogspot.com/
The moment I first clicked on this blog I was excited. It had my attention at the first picture of a cheerleader from Oregon, Stephanie is her name and her picture really grabs your attention. But the whole blog is just that, pictures. I mean a few words here and there but other than that it is just pictures of cheerleaders. And because it is just pictures I am not sure if I like the blog or dislike it. I love looking at cheerleaders, seeing how each and everyone of them is different, I LOVE looking at all the different uniforms. They are all different and unique. But I just wish it had a little more words.
The blog itself is updated everyday with countless more pictures adding to it. I can tell that there are a few people who comment on the pictures and it shows people are looking, but because they are pictures I feel like more people only look at the pictures and there is not much to comment on. Just about how so and so likes the uniforms but nothing really else.
Other than all that, I love this blog. :)

My Blog :)

When it came to designing my blog I chose something that is colorful and different. I like the color blue and pink. I think both are pretty cool. I chose strips in my background because i loved the way the design looks. I changed though all of the colors the design originally had because I wanted my favorite colors in there. I think it looks like me, it looks like a cheerleader.

Blast from the past

It is weird to be blogging again. I used one many years ago and I liked it a lot. Wish I could remember my old blog though.
